The Works

We’re talking about the music we play. This is the official repertoire blog of the musicians of the Oregon Symphony.
Wagner, Overture to Tannhauser

This piece uses the full power of the orchestra (an some very daring string writing, as in, “I dare you to play this!”) to depict monumental longing leading to spiritual and amorous ecstasy. It’s hard to follow this overture with anything other than the rest of the opera, so we’re putting it at the end of the concert.
