The Works
We’re talking about the music we play. This is the official repertoire blog of the musicians of the Oregon Symphony.- Beethoven, Symphony No. 2
-
This is the first Beethoven symphony I ever played (you would think it would have been the 5th, but I don’t think I ever played the 5th until I was playing professionally). The one and only time I played Beethoven’s second symphony was almost 14 years ago, when I was in youth orchestra and had very few years of experience playing the orchestral repertoire. I look forward to playing it again with my wonderful colleagues and many more years of experience, including the other eight symphonies, under my belt.

March 23rd, 2008I think Keiko will agree with me that we have had a fresh look at the 2nd Symphony this week, and in doing so one really hears the piece as an indication of what is to come, for Beethoven, in the remaining 7 symphonies. This piece has so much breadth to it: at one moment it is all lightness and air, the next is poignant and the next is a splash of broad humor. The last movement is the most humorous, where the burping and belching main theme can be seen as a musical depiction of the composer’s chronic indigestion.
