The Works

We’re talking about the music we play. This is the official repertoire blog of the musicians of the Oregon Symphony.
Beethoven, Symphony No. 2

This is the first Beethoven symphony I ever played (you would think it would have been the 5th, but I don’t think I ever played the 5th until I was playing professionally). The one and only time I played Beethoven’s second symphony was almost 14 years ago, when I was in youth orchestra and had very few years of experience playing the orchestral repertoire. I look forward to playing it again with my wonderful colleagues and many more years of experience, including the other eight symphonies, under my belt.

I think Keiko will agree with me that we have had a fresh look at the 2nd Symphony this week, and in doing so one really hears the piece as an indication of what is to come, for Beethoven, in the remaining 7 symphonies. This piece has so much breadth to it: at one moment it is all lightness and air, the next is poignant and the next is a splash of broad humor. The last movement is the most humorous, where the burping and belching main theme can be seen as a musical depiction of the composer’s chronic indigestion.
