Berio combines several folksongs from various countries into a vocal showcase, in that the voice is totally exposed here. Berio uses the orchestra sparingly, creating unusualy sounds and textures that create an atmosphere of improvisation. These sounds are unusual for the orchestra, evoking at times non-Western instruments.
