The Works

We’re talking about the music we play. This is the official repertoire blog of the musicians of the Oregon Symphony.
Orff, Carmina Burana

After three performances of Carmina this weekend, one thing that stands out is the freshness and originality of the music. There is a distilled simplicity here (a little like in the music of Kurt Weill). This piece is very much for the choir, as the orchestration is fairly simple. (The choir did an outstanding job at both the technique and emotion of the music, I felt.) In one of these brilliant touches–my favorite–Orff uses two flutes doing what is called “flutter tongue” to depict flames licking at the roasting lamb.
