The Works

We’re talking about the music we play. This is the official repertoire blog of the musicians of the Oregon Symphony.
Messiaen, The Ascension

One both listens to and experiences Messiaen’s music. If you take The Ascension away from its Catholic program–four meditations of the Ascension of Christ–this piece still seems to be about transcending life on earth. Bird calls fill the second movement, for instance, and the bird was for Messiaen a symbol of the transcendent spirit. Playing second violin in this work also gives me time to meditate!
