The Works
We’re talking about the music we play. This is the official repertoire blog of the musicians of the Oregon Symphony.- Strauss, Suite from Der Rosenkavalier
-
This suite of orchestral music from Stauss’ comic opera is so evocative, one could almost call it his last great tone poem. To me, the arch of the work points toward the love duet between the young Sophie and Octavian (who is played by a mezzo-soprano in the opera. Listen also for the eerily sparkling chords that the celesta plays (combined with other instruments) to depict the silver rose that Octavian brings to Sophie as a traditional symbol of engagement. He’s delivering it for someone else, at first, but the rose does its magic and all is set right in the end.
